A little bit about me. I am originally from Austin, Texas- a state that is a whole other country! I moved to Evansville in January 1999 and have quickly adapted to the culture and environment. In Austin, it rarely snowed and when it did, the snow was so light that our snowballs were mostly cold mud. So imagine my delight when I was able to experience real snow here in Evansville. My family is very important to me and we have annual gatherings at a beach in Texas. Our beach reunions began as an effort to help with the "Don't Mess with Texas" campaign by dedicating 4 hours to pick up litter on the beach. This tradition began 20 years ago and is something we still practice today.
My work in the Telecommunications began at Time Warner Austin in 1996 and I immediately fell in love with the industry. I have always been devoted to serving the public and internal customers, so I find it very rewarding when I can make someone's day or suprise them with a special moment. My experience with WOW! has been especially rewarding for me since I have the privlege to work with great people, in a company that demonstrates "how it's supposed to be".
The well-being of the communities we serve is very important to WOW! employees. In the spirit of Servanthood and Accountability, two of our four Core Values, we believe that we should give back to our communities to help sustain their growth and vitality. Therefore we encourage and empower our team members to volunteer in activities and outreach programs that help make things better for others and provide a unique and fulfilling experience for them personally.
As a company, we recognize that volunteer work takes dedication and a tremendous commitment from the volunteer. In 2011, WOW! initiated a program to financially assist their employees with this fulfilling duty. Each employee has the opportunity to devote an entire work day to volunteer at a local charitable event or organization without losing a day’s pay. We call it W.I.N., for WOW! In the Neighborhood. The program brings volunteer work to the forefront and encourages employees to give back to our communities.
One of the organizations that has benefited from our volunteer commitment is the local Ronald McDonald House in Evansville, Indiana. This House provides a “home-away-from-home” for families of seriously ill children who are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. It was a dream created from necessity and nurtured out of love…it was “The House That Love Built®.”
Ironically, while we are providing meals and service to these families, we enjoy the opportunity to work together as team outside of our work environment. Most of you have heard the saying, “There are too many cooks in the kitchen “but it’s just not true at The Ronald McDonald House. We find it gives us an environment to show we care, and work as a team so that families can enjoy a delicious home cooked meal and help ease the burden of their situation. Another thing we’ve learned with this experience is that the old saying is true: The best ingredient for every successful meal is LOVE.

WOW!’s Evansville, Indiana management team dedicates time and effort to express appreciation for its field technicians on a regular basis. This summer, after several consecutive days of extreme heat and humidity, they surprised the techs as they left the office to begin their daily routes. While the technical staff was attending their weekly meeting, the Human Resources team and the General Manager dressed up in safety gear and planted signs along the long driveway leading to the main road. When the meeting was over and the technicians left for their daily assignments, they were greeted by a series of signs that read, Have – A – Great – Day! At the end of the signs was a ‘safety’ roadblock. It was amusing to watch while most technicians were initially confused by the three people standing at the end of the street waving safety flags to slow them down. As each technician paused at the roadblock, they received a WOW! Bag filled with Gatorade, Cookies and Breakfast bars and a big ‘Thank you!’ for their efforts in the oppressive weather.
The original question was, “How can we create some fun and show gratitude for our staff that have to work in these awful temperatures AND keep a happy disposition with our customers?” The idea for the event was developed when a member of management saw road signs that directed traffic to the next gas station. The technicians loved the goodies and were thankful for the words of appreciation. When the technicians came back to the office at the end of that day the signs were reversed and this time they said, We – Really – Appreciate – You! It’s times like these when the days are long and hot that it’s important to let our team know how much their hard work is valued.
