Hope you enjoyed the surfing tips from last week. Here’s a few more I got from one of our Tier 3 Representatives, Neal Jones, that will help if you feel like doing some troubleshooting on your own.
If rebooting the computer didn’t get you on to the web and you have a wired connection, most versions of Windows have a built in function to repair a network connection.
For Microsoft Windows XP and earlier versions:
1. Click start, then click control panel
2. Click Network and Internet Connections
3. Click Network Connections
4. Double click the connection you want to repair ( this is usually named Local Area Connection)
5. Click the support tab, then Repair
For Microsoft Windows Vista:
1. Right click on the Network icon (looks like 2 computers overlapping) in the notification area. This would be in the lower right of your screen, near the clock.
2. Click “Diagnose and Repair”
For Microsoft Windows 7
1. Click on Start
2. Click on Control Panel
3. Click on “Network and Sharing Center”
4. Click on the “Troubleshoot Problems” link
5. Select the option for “Internet Connections” and follow the prompts.
If you have a WOW wireless connection and are having problems, here are some general steps to make sure you are connecting to the WOW! wireless network.
1. If you have a laptop with a switch that disables the wireless capability, make sure it is turned on
2. Check for the wireless network icon in the notification in the lower right of your computer screen, down near the clock.
3. If you put your mouse over that icon, you should get a message letting you know if you are connected to a network.
4. If you are not connected to the WOW! network, right-click the wireless network icon and try to connect to a network.
5. If the WOW! network is asking for a password, that will be the same password you originally used to connect to the wireless network. If you don’t have your password, call us 1-866-496-9669 and we can help you.
Don’t feel like troubleshooting on your own? No worries, we are here 24/7 to help, so please call us anytime at 1-866-496-9669 .

So many of the calls we receive from our customers are for lost internet connections and the inability to surf the web. Losing your web connection is a drag so I thought our customers might be interested in a few self-help tips. I spoke with one of our Tier 3 Representatives, Neal Jones, and here’s a few starter tips on how to troubleshoot internet connectivity, on your own, if you’d like to give it a try.
- First, consider what the lights on your modem are doing.
Both the power light and the “Online” lights should always be on.
- If the modem has no lights at all, check the power cord. The only time the power light will be completely off is if the modem is unplugged.
- If it is plugged into a power strip, check to make sure the power strip is plugged in and is turned on. This could be a simple solution to the problem.
- The other lights on the modem may be solid or flashing, check these to verify that the modem is connected to the WOW! network. The Power, DS, US, and online lights should solid at all times. The rest of the lights on the modem may flash if the internet or the phone service is active.
- If these 4 lights are not all solid, press the reset button on the back of the modem for 3-5 seconds to reboot the modem.
- If the lights are still not solid, check the cable line to the modem, making sure all connections are finger tight and bypassing and splitters, creating a direct connection from the wall plate to the modem.
- If the Power, DS, US, and online lights fail to stay solid, it’s time to call us for technical support at 1-866-496-9669.
Evaluating the modem lights sounds simple, and it is. It’s one of the easiest first steps to take and may solve the problem. If these steps don’t work, there are more easy steps you can take on your own. Stay tuned for more tips next week.

So a big snow storm is scheduled to roll through, it’s getting dark out, and you hope for the best. As you well know, mother nature can be brutal and sometimes you find yourself, in the dark, without power. Losing power is scary and causes you and your family to be a bit restless. Here’s one less thing to worry about while clicking on those flashlights and pulling out those candles.
- In the event of a power outage, your WOW! Phone service (including access to 911) will continue to work as expected so long as your broadband connection is unaffected. Thankfully, WOW! modems include a back-up battery pack that lasts approximately 4 hours.
- It pays to keep at least one corded phone in your house because some cordless phones depend upon power and may not work in a power outage.
- Check your Advanced Modem battery lights regularly to ensure that your battery is functioning correctly. If you have any questions on your Advanced Modem battery, or WOW!’s support of your battery, please call us at 1-866-496-9669 or visit www.wowway.com/phonebattery
We hope mother nature is always good to you and keeps your power and cable connection flowing so you don’t need to worry. But, in case she’s not good to you, remember where you stashed your flashlight and candles, have a corded phone handy, and know that you are likely able to call someone (like your Mom) to offer encouragement while waiting for the lights to come back on.
