Broadway In Your Backyard

I talk a lot about the various entertainment options available each week typically through your television or the web.  But, this week’s article is about getting up off the couch and catching a slice of the Big Apple in your city’s backyard.  Broadway Across America brings some of the best shows from Broadway to various cities across the United States.

About a year and a half ago, I saw the Broadway production of Burn The Floor.  From the title, you can assume that there is dancing  involved in the show, but what type is the question?  Fans of Dancing With The Stars or So You Think You Can Dance will definitely love the show.  But this blog isn’t about the show itself but the opportunity to witness some of the best dancing that I have ever seen.  It was such a hit that they took the show on the road and are currently touring the nation spreading the dancing bug to all those who want to experience something different.  I just happened to have another opportunity to experience the show for a second time when it stopped in Chicago for a two week stint.  All I could say is AMAZING!

So many different genres – drama, comedy, musical or dance, to choose from.  I believe that live theater is forgotten in today’s entertainment world but it shouldn’t be.  If you have never experienced it, what are you waiting for?

What’s On TV Thanksgiving Day

After seeing the match-ups for the upcoming NFL Thanksgiving Day games, I’m not sure how entertaining those will be so I decided to see what else is on the tube.  Here’s what I found:

  • Fan of the Macy’s Day parade?  Hit up CBS if you are looking for highlights of the parade along with performances from Carrie Underwood and various Broadway musical casts.  The actual Macy’s Day Parade is on NBC with a bigger star studded lineup including Kanye West, Jessica Simpson, Jimmy Fallon and more.
  • TLC has a Cake Boss marathon Thanksgiving Day if you are a fan of Buddy and his amazing cake creations.
  • It’s not the start of the holiday season without the debut of a Miracle on 34th Street which will be on NBC in the early afternoon.
  • Want to see homes available in exotic locations?  HGTV is running a House Hunters International marathon for most of the day.
  • Another Thanksgiving staple is A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving which will air on ABC Thursday evening.
  • If you’re looking for some concerts right at home, Taylor Swift’s Speak Now tour on NBC and Beyonce’s I Am World Tour on ABC.

Hope this helps you find something to watch on Thanksgiving Day. Wishing you and your family a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Summertime Series Highlights Southern Indiana

Thanks to Phyllis Newman, our Regional Marketing Representative in our Evansville market for this week’s post!

July in Southern Indiana means county 4-H fairs!  Lemon shake-ups, taffy, grilled corn on the cob, rides, tractor pulls, my favorite is hog wrestling and so much more fun that I can’t wait!  I am getting hungry just writing this.

Here are some of my favorite fairs with links to their websites for more information:

Besides the county fairs, there is plenty of other activities to keep you busy this summer.  Love baseball?  Check out the Evansville Otters who are part of the Frontier Baseball League which is part of the Independent Professional Baseball Federation.  Did you know that A League of Their Own was filmed at Bosse Field where the Otters play? How cool is that!

If you aren’t a fan of baseball and love history, I would definitely recommend visiting the Angel Mounds State Historic Site.  For a glimpse into a past of the Native American settlers in this area, this is the place to go!

For the typically summer destination for family fun, head on over to the Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden.

Summertime Series Highlights Chicago

As much as I love to sit down and watch a good TV show, during the summertime, I love getting outside.  Chicago has a plethora of entertainment options from sports, festivals, music concerts and much more.  There’s something for everyone!

Sporting Events

Festivals and Concerts

There are a number of local festivals that go on during the summer months in Chicago and the ‘burbs all offering food and music, there is always something to do.

Taste of ChicagoRuns from June 25th through July 4 at Grant Park from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.  You can stroll through the park at no charge but to taste all the food, you do need to purchase tickets.

Naperville Exchange Club’s RibfestIf you don’t want to make the trek downtown, head on out to the suburb’s best festival which not only has great music but the food is unbelievable!  Located at Naperville’s Knoch Park with admission only $12 per person with kids under 11 free.

Old St. Patrick’s 26th Annual World’s Largest Block Party - This event which raises money for the church’s outreach programs offers great food, music and more.  The block party is July 9th and 10th.

Lollapalooza - If you are a huge fan of music, Lollapalooza is the place for you.  Featuring all kinds of music, this three day event packs a lot of punch.  The festival is August 6th through the 8th at Grant Park.

I am sure there are plenty of more festivals, concerts and sporting events that I missed and would love to hear your favorites or must attends!

Summertime Entertainment Series

As much as I love watching TV, the summertime is a great time to get out and experience different entertainment options such as festivals, concerts, sporting events and more.  What’s even better is the opportunity to rediscover places that you haven’t visited in a long time.  Here in Chicago, I forget the great museums that we have downtown such as the Field Museum, The Museum of Science and Industry or the Shedd Aquarium that probably have changed a number of their exhibits since I last visited them as a kid.

Over the next couple of entertainment blog posts, I am going to highlight some great upcoming events that will get you up off your couch and out and about exploring your community with renewed interest.  If you have some summertime shows that you love watching, don’t worry about missing them – set your DVR to record them.  I also encourage you to check out our Facebook page for upcoming events in your community that we will be at as well.

Next week, I’ll be kicking off our summertime entertainment series with my hometown, Chicago.
