Summertime Series Highlights Southern Indiana

Thanks to Phyllis Newman, our Regional Marketing Representative in our Evansville market for this week’s post!

July in Southern Indiana means county 4-H fairs!  Lemon shake-ups, taffy, grilled corn on the cob, rides, tractor pulls, my favorite is hog wrestling and so much more fun that I can’t wait!  I am getting hungry just writing this.

Here are some of my favorite fairs with links to their websites for more information:

Besides the county fairs, there is plenty of other activities to keep you busy this summer.  Love baseball?  Check out the Evansville Otters who are part of the Frontier Baseball League which is part of the Independent Professional Baseball Federation.  Did you know that A League of Their Own was filmed at Bosse Field where the Otters play? How cool is that!

If you aren’t a fan of baseball and love history, I would definitely recommend visiting the Angel Mounds State Historic Site.  For a glimpse into a past of the Native American settlers in this area, this is the place to go!

For the typically summer destination for family fun, head on over to the Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden.

Summertime Series Highlights Chicago

As much as I love to sit down and watch a good TV show, during the summertime, I love getting outside.  Chicago has a plethora of entertainment options from sports, festivals, music concerts and much more.  There’s something for everyone!

Sporting Events

Chicago is known for its big name professional teams (Bulls, Bears, Hawks, Sox, Cubs), it is also home to a number of semi-pro and professional teams as well.

Schaumburg FlyersA professional baseball team that is part of the Northern League and plays at Alexian Field in Schaumburg, Illinois.  Tickets are $100 for the Reserved Club, $10 for Reserved and $5 for Lawn/Bleacher.

Kane County Cougars -  A Class A Affiliate of the Oakland Athletics that is part of the Midwest League and plays at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, Illinois.  Tickets start as low as $8.

Windy City ThunderboltsAn independent professional minor league team that is part of the Frontier League and plays at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, Illinois.  Tickets start as low as $8.

Chicago Fire - If you are a soccer fan, check out Chicago’s professional MLS team.  They play at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois.  Tickets start at $15.

Chicago Sky – If you have a daughter that has aspirations of becoming a professional basketball player, take her to the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois to see the Chicago Sky who are part of the WNBA.  Tickets start at $17.

Festivals and Concerts

There are a number of local festivals that go on during the summer months in Chicago and the ‘burbs all offering food and music, there is always something to do.

Taste of ChicagoRuns from June 25th through July 4 at Grant Park from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.  You can stroll through the park at no charge but to taste all the food, you do need to purchase tickets.

Naperville Exchange Club’s RibfestIf you don’t want to make the trek downtown, head on out to the suburb’s best festival which not only has great music but the food is unbelievable!  Located at Naperville’s Knoch Park with admission only $12 per person with kids under 11 free.

Old St. Patrick’s 26th Annual World’s Largest Block Party - This event which raises money for the church’s outreach programs offers great food, music and more.  The block party is July 9th and 10th.

Lollapalooza - If you are a huge fan of music, Lollapalooza is the place for you.  Featuring all kinds of music, this three day event packs a lot of punch.  The festival is August 6th through the 8th at Grant Park.

I am sure there are plenty of more festivals, concerts and sporting events that I missed and would love to hear your favorites or must attends!

A Day in the Life of WOW! Field Technician

Silverman_Mark

Mark - Field Tecnician

This week s “Day in the Life” comes from one of our Field Technicians.  The Field Technician do a variety of jobs besides the usual install or trouble call.  They are also proficient in sales and retention.  I was able to get some questions answered by one of our technicians, Mark.  Below is his reply:

  • Tell me what a typical day in the life of WOW! Technician is like?

Mark – The daily life of a WOW! Technician is as unpredictable as the local weather report. It all begins with the journey to the first job in your respective route. The day comes to its conclusion following many hours of troubleshooting and repair. However, a typical day is a rarity. The primary consistency in the daily routine of a WOW! Technician is simply the variation of install and service appointments that are present on a daily basis.

  • What are the tools you have available to do your job?

Mark – There is a wide-ranging assortment of tools that are necessary to complete an entire shift as a WOW! Technician. These tools include but are not limited to: Wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, cable strippers, crimp tool and a drill. If any one of these tools is missing, an unpredictable day with many surprises just became that much more difficult. There are additional tools that are used at times, but the tools listed above are the most commonly used.

  • What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Mark – The most rewarding part of being a WOW! Technician is seeing the look on our customer’s faces after their services have been repaired or restored.  Presenting our customer’s with the highest level of service and verifying that there services are performing to company standards represents its own reward. There really is no greater thrill.

  • What training do you have to go through to do your job?

Mark – The training that is required for a WOW! technician is an install training class that will typically last approximately two weeks. When skills with our cable services appear to be mastered, an HSD training class is the next step, which usually lasts one day. Phone training is next and that course usually lasts about three days. Service training will be completed when all of the install skills have been established.

  • What’s the most asked question you get from customers?

Mark – It’s not exactly the most ideal question you want to hear, but the most commonly asked question by customers is usually something in the vicinity of, “By the way, can you take a look at another problem I’ve been having?” As WOW! technicians, it’s not something we enjoy hearing, but is something that must be attended to in order for the highest level of service to be maintained that our customer’s deserve.

  • Can WOW! tecnicians answer other questions about my service?

Mark – WOW! technicians can answer anything a customer wants to know regarding any of their services with WOW!. I personally enjoy customers asking a barometer of questions because communication is vital and these questions may prevent service calls in the future. When it is all said and done at the end of the day, WOW! it was that kind of experience.
The Field Technicians occupation is not only physically demanding but mentally demanding, as well.  Just like the postal system (used to be), these folks are working no matter the temperature or weather conditions.   The quote should be changed to: “Neither rain, nor snow, nor dark of night can keep a WOW! technician from his appointed rounds”
