Saying ‘Thanks!’ the WOW! Way

Recently, I was struck anew with appreciation for being in a Human Resources position at a company like WOW!.  Why?  Because I was asked to review a tri-fold recruiting brochure being developed in one of our field locations and in it, there are several quotes from WOW! employees.  This is what they said:

“I have worked for WOW! for five years and I can truly say WOW! is part of my family.  If you ever wanted to work for a company that cares and supports their employees and helps them strive for ‘gold’ in their career, then this is the company for you.  I cannot imagine working anywhere else”

“It only gets better and better and you WILL have a WOW! Moment while you are here… it’s just a matter of time!”

“Working for WOW! has been one of the best experiences of my life.  Since working here I have gained a level of self-respect that will never go away, and I have the courage to step out and do things I never would have imagined possible.”

Can you imagine working for a company where the culture and atmosphere inspire employees to say things like that?!  At WOW!, it’s all in a day’s work, and it all boils down to our focus on Servanthood.  Everyone at WOW! learns (and eventually believes in their own heart) that it is an honor to serve others.  When you are in a Human Resources department, whose primary function is to serve others, it is extraordinarily rewarding to have other managers, department heads and yes, even the executives of the company have the same mindset… the honor of serving others.

Servanthood is a self-fulfilling practice.  When you ‘do’ for others, I guarantee there will be a time, maybe when you least expect it, that others will ‘do’ for you.  As we approach our national day of giving thanks, I would like to express my own gratitude for being part of this unique company and send out my own Thanksgiving wish:

May everyone who reads this either give or receive a WOW! Moment today.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Bigger IS Better – When It’s Done The WOW! Way

Expansion has been a big focus for WOW! recently, as it has been for years from the very people we encounter in our daily walks of life.  I cannot count the many times I’ve been asked in my own city “WOW!……..what’s that mean?”  In a lot of cases this is just a question from seeing the letters on a shirt or coat, but then it turns into something much, much more.  As I go into who we are, what products we offer, and the amazing customer experience we provide I’m left with a “when are you coming to our neck of the woods” or “are you available in…..”.  Recently the time has come where we are finally moving outside of our original boundaries via expansion into new cities and towns.  For Illinois that first city is Park Ridge!

Expansion is an expensive venture with significant capital investment, so we really want to focus on being successful – which means bringing our exceptional customer service experience to as many new customers as possible.  Our Dispatch Team really wanted to do our part in sharing the responsibility of spreading the word and participating in this much anticipated growth.  How? was the big question.  Our interactions derive mostly with internal customers (technicians, call center representatives, etc…).  What could we do to play our part?

We decided to help with marketing efforts and the Dispatch Management Team organized an outing to go door-to-door with door-hanger tags in newly released areas of Park Ridge.  That was it!!  What an amazing opportunity to get out of the office and celebrate the expansion opportunities first hand.  On 10/13/10 the Dispatch Management team conducted their first Door-Hanging Party, hitting the streets with door-hangers, chip clips, and WOW pens in hand for friendly distribution.  We were able to hang a total of 595 homes!  The team really “owned” it by going a step further ensuring their business cards were affixed to their hangers in an effort to demonstrate the dedication our staff has in reaching out to the residents/future customers of Park Ridge.  We had an amazing time and really were able to use this outing as a means to strengthen our relationships with each other.

The value of this outing to our team and to the company left us wanting more.  So, we will be expanding these Door-Hanging Parties to include the Quality/Training Team and also our Dispatchers, who really represent the “face” of WOW! to customers and technicians each and every day!  Only at WOW! would the expansion of our system into new cities become an expanded teambuilding opportunity for departments that normally have nothing to do with direct sales.

Does it get Better than this?

How would you like to work for a company and suggest an improvement and you are idea is actually taken into consideration? Wouldn’t that make you feel great?? It would make you feel like you really are a part of the company and not just a number for no one to see. Well (and I know you know what I am going to say to that) WOW! is a company that listens.

There is a program, here at WOW!, that lets the employees make suggestion to better help our customers. “What?” “Really?” you say? Absolutely!! Who better to listen to then the people that are interacting with our customer’s every day? There isn’t. All of the suggestions are taken into consideration and, if it is something that can be proven to help with the customer experience, it is put into place. Not all suggestions are implemented, due to whatever reason (cost, impossibilities, etc…) but everyone is read and discussed for either immediate or future implementation. Is that ridiculous? I don’t think so. That just shows another way the WOW! is listening to improve themselves with the help of the people that make this the wonderful company it is!!

If you, our valued customers, have a suggestion, I would love to hear it and pass it on to the rest of the organization for review.

Benefits: The WOW! Way

I don’t know about you but I am very nervous about the Health Care Reforms being discussed and implemented.  As the beneficiary of a company that provides great benefits to its employees, I am leery of my coverages being compromised in quality and level of care, reduced by requiring larger co-pays, or becoming taxable as part of my income.  (There’s a scary thought!)

One of the great things about WOW! is the traditionally exceptional level of benefits provided by the company.  We have a preferred-provider health plan that lets us choose our doctors and there are two versions of the plan.  The maximum out-of-pocket cost under both plans is less than most companies’ upfront deductible.  We have dental coverage, vision coverage, company-paid life and accidental death/dismemberment policies.  We have company-paid short-term and long-term disability.  We can shelter medical and dependent care expenses in a pre-tax Flexible Savings Plan.  We save for retirement via a 401k plan.  After a year, WOW! will reimburse job-related tuition expenses up to $5000.  We start accruing vacation time on our first day of work, we get four personal holidays and seven company holidays per year.  WOW! allows employees to work a flexible schedule – meaning some employees have a 4 x 10 option and others can start earlier or later than 8am.  On top of all of this we have LOTS of opportunities for performance incentives, award and recognition programs and company events and celebrations.

We’re very fortunate, aren’t we?  The one thing I do know about WOW! and health care reform is this:  leadership at this company will make the best decisions possible on behalf of our employees and our business, AND any significant changes will be communicated in time for employees to plan accordingly.  I’m guessing there are a lot of hardworking people out there who can’t say that about their leadership teams.

WOW! employees have a benefits program that lives up to our name.

There’s Always Room for Improvement – the WOW! Way

Two weeks ago, the entire leadership team of WOW! gathered for our annual conference.  It’s a 2-day offsite event, that keeps the world at bay and our attention focused inward.  This is a time to review our progress against this year’s goals, discuss key business strategies for the future, build on our relationships with each other, and work on our own development as people and as effective leaders.

Some might scoff at the time and expense we invest in these annual gatherings.  I beg to differ – not because I attend and feel a need to justify it to outsiders – au contraire!  This gathering has a significant impact on keeping the leadership team connected to each other and connected to our short term and long term goals.  It also serves, via the development segment, to keep us challenged in our roles and focused on ‘sharpening the saw’ as Steven R. Covey put it in his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.  While it would not be appropriate for me to talk about business strategies (sorry!), here’s a little summary of what we did for our development work this year:

In April and May, the leadership team went through a 360 feedback process.  This is a tool for gathering feedback from direct-report employees, peers, internal customers and ‘the boss.’ It provides results on how they perceive your effectiveness in 29 areas of leadership behavior.  Results can be encouraging, disappointing, and even downright frightening if you aren’t prepared to use it the way it is meant to be used… as a tool for your development.  In reality, there’s no such thing as bad results on a 360 chart.  The only bad thing that can come of it is if you don’t use the feedback to work on getting better.

In May we all received our individual results along with some professional coaching.   In June, in the morning of our development day, we shared our charts and our coaching results with the six or seven other managers who sat at our tables.  This is almost unheard of in other organizations.  360 feedback is generally confidential.  But how can we be accountable for our results if we don’t acknowledge them?  In fact, it was difficult to own our shortcomings and toot our horns at our own strengths, but we did it.  As it turns out, it was good practice for the afternoon.  In the afternoon we sat with our regional or functional leadership teams: Ohio people sat together, Indiana people sat together, I.T. people sat together and so on.  This time we shared our results with people who work with us everyday, almost all of whom contributed to the feedback reflected on our 360 charts.  It was emotionally difficult, but well worth the effort.  After all, we were on the same playing field (humility and vulnerability are great equalizers), and as a localized team, we are in the best positions to support each other through change.

Finally, each group looked at a 360 chart that showed the combined results of their regional or functional team.  Talk about enlightening!  It was very interesting to see the overall patterns and ‘personality’ of our team as perceived by others.  This picture gave us the opportunity to see where we should focus as a leadership group – to minimize our weaknesses and improve our strengths.  At the group level, our take-away from this exercise is to identify 3 or 4 changes that will most improve our team leadership and then outline what we will do to make these changes happen.  We were all worn out by the end of the day, but at our casual dinner that evening everyone talked about what a powerful and meaningful experience it was.

WOW!’s annual Leadership Conference is always more work than fun, but the end result is a more capable, cohesive leadership team.
