The Best Part of the Super Bowl…The Commercials

Update – I had to repost this article again because if my football team isn’t in the Super Bowl, I am really watching to see the newest commercials.  It’s interesting this year as I came across a post talking about how this year’s Super Bowl is going to be dominated with automobile commercials from cars to tires and car services which is interesting in light of the current economy.  In addition, the author states that it will also be heavily movie focused as well.  It will be interesting to see what happens.  As for who I am rooting for, as a huge Chicago Bears fan (extremely disappointed in our QB, but that’s another conversation), I want Big Ben and the Steelers to bring down the Packers.

In one week millions of viewers will be glued to their televisions for an event that can almost be considered a national holiday.  The Super Bowl is like Thanksgiving but in February.  Friends and families get together for a day that is filled with food and watching the game.  If you aren’t watching the game, you are probably tuned in to watch a new batch of  commercials.  Advertisers are banking on this especially with the average cost of a 30 second commercial this year in the range of $2.5 million.  This is probably the one day out of the entire year were they know you aren’t recording the game to watch later.  I personally like watching the commercials than I do the half-time show especially these  last couple of years.

Here are some of my all-time favorite commercials:

  • McDonald\’s Showdown: Bird vs. Jordan
    • I’m biased because I grew up in Chicago during the Jordan era.  I love this commercial not only because it had two of the biggest stars in the NBA at that time but it put an interesting twist on my favorite playground game of HORSE.
  • Budweiser Frogs
    • How could you not love these adorable frogs?  It was different at the time and created a buzz.
  • Pepsi Kid In Bottle
    • Even though I am not a fan of Pepsi, this is a very cute commercial.  The kid is drinking his Pepsi and trying to get the last drop that he ends up getting sucked into the Pepsi bottle.  Love at the end of the commercial when his sister says, “Mom, he did it again!”
  • Blockbuster\’s Carl and Ray
    • I am a sucker for commercials with cute animals.  Blockbuster used these two pets, Carl and Ray, who were excited about movies since the Blockbuster was across the street (of course).  Loved the Flashdance sequence.

What are some of your favorite Super Bowl commercials?

Keeping Up With Your New Year’s Exercise Resolutions

It’s a beginning of a new year which typically means many of us are making a commitment to getting into shape.  Gym memberships, expensive diets, exercise infomercials that get us to purchase programs that we didn’t need until we watched them.  How about saving some money on all those unnecessary expenses and making your own workout plan at home?

I love that our portal page offers our customers the opportunity to utilize various free workouts through Exercise TV.  They offer a number of different exercises such as getting in shape for that bikini (can you believe they are already in stores), getting your feet moving with some great dance moves or just a good old butt kicking from the Biggest Loser’s hardest trainer, Jillian Michaels.

The best part is that with many of the videos being only a couple minutes a piece, you really can piece together your own workout.  Instead of having to do the same workout day in and day out, you can keep it interactive, fun and most of all worth the time that you put it.  What are you waiting for, start getting into shape today!

Blackouts Revisted

In checking the WOW! internal customer service announcement page (the main place our customer service reps go to regularly for helpful information) for a good educational topic to blog about, a blackout announcement was right there on top.  There’s a blurb about the Cleveland Indians game with the Chicago White Sox on WGN on August 30th and it occurs to me that football season is upon us.  Oh wait a minute while I google it.   It’s baseball, not football.  Sorry, I’m not a professional sports fan although I do have a special place in my heart for the Colorado Rockies and notice, as I was googling about the other teams, that the Rockies just beat and stunned the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.  Way to Go Rockies!  Most often though, I have a hard time telling one team from another.  But, I do know there’s always the start of a professional sports season lurking in the near future, so blackouts are  a good topic to refresh everyone on.  To do this, I reached way back into our archives to an article that Bob Pech contributed early in the year about blackouts.  I thought it was a good one, one that you’d enjoy reading again if you’ve been following our blog, and if you’re new to the site, you’ll enjoy it as well.  Click  here to read it.

The Hype Known as NBA Free Agency 2010

I am sure like many of you, the hype of what we can call the 2010 NBA Free Agency is way overrated.  I was over the whole LeBron and friends before it even started.  Here in Chicago where basketball in the ’90’s reigned supreme, ruined me for what we call the game today.  Back when Jordan, Magic, Larry, Charles and others played, you didn’t want to be on the same team as your buddy.  You wanted to compete against one another for bragging rights of who had the better team.

On top of all of this, there was a one hour special for him to announce his decision.  Seriously?!  Why does one individual who has been hyped for so long to be one of the best players to come along and hasn’t done anything yet, deserve all this attention?  Bottom line is money.  He and Chris Bosh will ride on the coat tails of DeWayne Wade, who’s already won a championship, to try to get another one or two.  The best part about all of this is that all the other teams in the league are going to be ready to take them on.  At the end of the day, your skills on the basketball court should speak for you, not your agent, your PR team or those other individuals who see the dollar signs.  With all this hype comes pressure and while they may not feel it now, they will for sure be feeling it when the season starts.

In Chicago, we know that you need a super star to jump start your team but you also need supporting players who will have your back no matter what.  Maybe LeBron didn’t want to come because he couldn’t live up to our already storied history.
